A Righteous Ramen

Ramen has become all too “trendy” amongst the hipster generation who believe that tasting the delights of Wagamama is exotic. However, the quest for true authentic noodles is somewhat challenging. Falmouth seems like one of the most unlikely places to experience Japanese cuisine. Within the old high street, just a stone’s throw away from Falmouth’s main shops, Kacho has perfected the art of the traditional Japanese ramen dish.

First opened in September 2014, Kacho offers a mini zen haven from the stresses and worries of everyday life. With the minimalistic Japanese themed decor Kacho brings a snippet of Japanese culture to Falmouth. Kacho has an almost exclusive elite feel to it, seating fifteen at maximum capacity. If you’re searching for a restaurant with buzz, Kacho is not for you. The cosy size gives a homely feel and owner, Masuyo Kunimi’s passion for antiques is displayed through the eclectic traditional Japanese pieces decorating the restaurant including a unique collection of hand painted, theatrical Japanese Noh masks.

Masuyo Kunimi believes in the philosophy that “food is a culture” and cares deeply about bringing a taste of Japanese culture to her customers, making food more of an experience than a necessity, with set rules, traditions and practices that surround Japanese dining culture. The noodle dishes are each served in deep ramen noodle bowls, accompanied by a set of bamboo chopsticks and a Japanese soup spoon. It’s refreshing to meet a restaurateur that is happy to cater for a small crowd, caring more about the individual good quality tasting experience, over the feed the masses, quick turnover restaurants.

The special Tan Tan ramen has a complex combination of peppery flavours with fiery chillies complimenting the refreshing but slightly sweet ginger. This tantalising dish with minced pork, chillies, garlic, ginger and black beans is great value for money in consideration to the generous portion size. Kacho’s menu doesn’t just stop at ramen, serving other Japanese dishes such as udon noodles, katsu curry and a pre-orderable sharing sushi platter.
